Looking for a VeriSwitch SmartShield alternative? Check these six things
Before choosing a VeriSwitch SmartShield alternative, check what arrives with each verdict, what you can see during the call, what happens on the flagged number's next call, what the TCPA note rests on, and the price. Each of the six checks below comes with Open Voice Shield's answer.
SmartShield, as VeriSwitch publishes it (checked 14 September 2026), analyzes live calls on the A-leg non-intrusively, applies AI and machine learning to behavioural and contextual patterns, gives TCPA compliance insights and reports what it detects. That may be exactly what a carrier needs. The questions below cover what you may need beyond it. The answers are ours, and the sources are linked. The full side-by-side is on the VeriSwitch SmartShield alternative page.
1. Does it carry the call, or watch it?
A passive system sees patterns, while a hop in the path holds the media. Open Voice Shield is one SIP hop you route to: the call is relayed onward as your own From and To, recorded in stereo on the way, and if the platform is unreachable your switch takes its normal alternate route. Nothing is installed and nothing changes on the far end, whatever the switch. The connect guides cover Asterisk, FreeSWITCH, Kamailio, OpenSIPS, PortaOne, Ribbon, AudioCodes, Jambonz, Twilio and Telnyx. VeriSwitch presents SmartShield on its home page as part of its own hosted switch and carrier management solution. If you run a different switch, ask the vendor how it fits. The call path page shows the hop end to end.
2. What comes back, exactly?
Ask for a sample call record, not a slide. On Open Voice Shield every checked call returns a probability, a category, the impersonated entity, red flags with the words that raised them, a summary, a TCPA note, per-leg estimated MOS, jitter and loss, the SIP log, the recording and the packet capture. Ask every vendor the same question: what can I forward to a customer or to counsel when a call is disputed?
Between 2 and 3: who decides the depth?
Not every trunk deserves the same treatment, and the fee should follow the choice. On Open Voice Shield the depth is set per destination: relay only, where SIP and media pass through metered and nothing is recorded; record only, where the recording and SIP log are kept with no transcript and no analysis fee; full analysis; or 1 in N with the rest recorded and analysable on demand. The AI mode is set per account, and retention windows for recordings, captures and SIP logs are enforced by deletion. Ask any vendor who sets those dials and where the rules are written down.
3. What can you see while the call is up?
Real-time means different things. SmartShield's page describes real-time analysis but not what an operator looks at during the call. On Open Voice Shield the live calls page lights one indicator per licensed port, and the line inspector opens on any of them: the SIP ladder as the proxy traces it, post-dial delay and codec as soon as they are known, and both media legs' packet counters from the relay. When one side stops sending, you see the counter stop. In standard mode the transcript and verdict follow the hang-up, typically within minutes. Realtime mode, set up on request, scores the conversation while the call is still up.
4. What happens on the flagged number's next call?
SmartShield's page lists automated blocking of confirmed campaigns as a future enhancement. On Open Voice Shield it is an automation rule you write today: block the number's next call, divert it, or send it to an AI voice agent that keeps the scammer talking to nobody. The divert to an AI voice agent post walks through that setup, and alert rules deliver the verdict to e-mail or Slack as it lands.
5. What is the TCPA note based on?
Both products state that a TCPA insight is not a comprehensive evaluation. What to check is what sits under the note. Open Voice Shield reads the conversation for the points a claim turns on, identification, consent, opt-out handling and the marketing nature of the call, quotes the moments that matter, and keeps the recording and transcript beside the note. The TCPA page lays out what the platform can and cannot tell you.
6. What does it cost, and how soon is the first result?
VeriSwitch does not publish SmartShield pricing on its product page. Open Voice Shield publishes a per-minute plan rate plus one analysis fee per checked call, prepaid, and gives a free credit at signup. See pricing. The first verdict arrives the same afternoon: whitelist an IP, add a destination, place a test call from the browser or let a voice agent place it. If you would rather not read every call, analyze 1 in N and keep the rest recorded.
Where SmartShield still fits
If you are a carrier that wants purely passive analysis of the A-leg, with no change to routing and no per-call fee, SmartShield is built for that and Open Voice Shield is not. The two do not conflict: route the trunks whose calls you must be able to prove through the hop, and leave network-wide campaign analysis to a passive system.
We publish no accuracy figure, because none has been computed against labelled real calls. To evaluate it, route one call in ten through the hop for a week and read the verdicts against what your team already knew. The full comparison has the table, the sources and the questions people ask.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
What should I check first in a VeriSwitch SmartShield alternative?
What arrives with each verdict: whether the recording, the transcript, the red flags and the SIP ladder are attached, or a notification alone. Then check what happens on the flagged number's next call, what the TCPA note is based on, and whether the price is published.
Does Open Voice Shield replace VeriSwitch SmartShield?
For teams that want evidence and enforcement on a trunk they control, it can. For a carrier that wants passive, non-intrusive analysis of the A-leg with no routing change, SmartShield is built for that shape. The two do not conflict. Some teams route the trunks they must be able to prove through Open Voice Shield and leave the rest passive.
How fast is a first verdict on Open Voice Shield?
The same afternoon. Sign up, whitelist an IP, add a destination and place a test call from the browser or let an agent place it. The verdict, transcript and audio quality land on the call page within minutes of hang-up.
